Lucy and Rosie Transferred to Lucky Paws!

These two lovely ladies are heading up to Eugene, Oregon, this week to seek their fortunate families! Lucy has been with us for over two months now, and we simply can't let her waste her youth in rescue, so we have made arrangements for her to go to Lucky Paws recscue, where she is sure to find her forever home very quickly.

Rosie will also join her buddy in the big city, and looks forward to making new friends while she awaits her spay date and her calendar fills up with family interviews.

We hate to see these two cuties leave Modoc, but because we have such a small population here, we often have to send our pups to towns with more people, or have those people come to us. No worries, this is all good news for these girls as they will be in a foster home with other playful dogs and loving families until their final home is found.

2023 Lives Saved

Thanks to a $10,000 investment from Petco Love, and contributions from people like YOU, we were able to rehome 114 dogs and 225 pet cats in 2023! In addition, 196 of the community's feral cats were altered, as were 100 pet cats and 83 dogs in low income families. Plus 446 animals received life-saving vaccinations, and 41 pets received emergency veterinary care that their owner's could not otherwise afford. Although we did lose 2 dogs and 12 cats to illness in our care during this year, and had to euthanized 6 dogs due to aggressive behaviors that made them unadoptable, over 94% of our animals found loving homes thanks to the diligent efforts of our volunteer staff. 2022 Lives Saved

In 2022, the High Plateau Humane Society took in 466 pets (330 cats and 136 dogs), and our TNR Program altered 106 feral cats! Sadly, we lost 23 kittens, 4 adult cats and one adult dog to illness 2022, and had to euthanize one dog for aggression. However, 99% of the dogs and 84% of the cats we took in were able to find loving homes thanks to our wonderful volunteers and contributions from people like YOU! In addition, HPHS's Low Cost Veterinary Program helped the community alter 97 pet cats, 63 feral cats, and 68 dogs in 2022, as well as immunize 280 pets and get access to needed emergency care for 66 pets. Yay!

The High Plateau Humane Society is able to do what we do because a number of groups and individuals support our work with donations and discounted services. Chief among these are:

The Modoc Veterinary Center provides us with discounted spay/neuter and immunizations. We could not function without this vital support. Thank you Dr. DePaul and all your wonderful staff!

The Petco Love Foundation provides matching funds for pets that we adopt out at their facility in Klamath Falls, and awarded a $4,000 grant in 2021 to help us save lives!

Alturas Mini Storage provides us with free storage space for all our emergency equipment and supplies. This not only allows us to focus our revenue on rescuing dogs and cats from the shelters, it also allows us to keep the equipment we need on hand to help with animals affected by community emergencies, like wildfires.

The City of Alturas, particularly Animal Control Officer Craig Wion, works very hard to keep animals off the street and well cared for at the City's Animal Shelter. Better yet, they also let us know when dogs have passed their 5 day hold so we can have a chance to pull them out before they have to be euthanized. The City, like the County, does not have enough staff to offer an adoption center for unwanted pets. The HPHS serves that function for all of Modoc County, and the City of Alturas helps us all they can by also offering to board dogs at their center at a discounted price when needed so we have an opportunity to find foster homes for them.
