THERE ARE PRESENTLY NO DOGS IN OUR LOCAL PUBLIC SHELTERS! YAY!!
Unfortunately, of the 10 potentially adoptable dogs that found themselves in the City and County shelters in January, only 7 made it out. Four came to HPHS, three were collected by their owners, and the last three were euthanized by the County because their owner did not come to get them, and we could not find someone to take them when they were offered to us.
Shelters are very stressful places for dogs, and sometimes good dogs relieve their stress by growling at strangers that come to meet them. Unfortunately, this behavior, though understandable, does not save their lives. HPHS is not always able to take in dogs the day they are offered to us, especially if they are growly and suspicious of strangers, as these dogs were. All the dogs we take in need to show they are both dog and people friendly in order to be considered "adoptable" and go into foster care. Although these three dogs might have proven they were adoptable if they could have gotten out of the shelter environment, they did not present themselves well in the shelter. This is the first time since March of 2018 that we could not save all the dogs we felt might be adoptable from our local shelters and it feels awful. We simply need more help from experienced dog people if we are to give dogs like this a chance. If you feel you could have taken in one of these dogs, please let us know and we will notify you the next time we are presented with a dog that might be adoptable if they can have time to de-stress from their shelter experience.

ALL TOLD, HPHS SAVED 20 DOGS IN JANUARY!
As we noted above, four of these were from a local (City) animal shelter (three puppies and their mom). Of the 20 dogs we took in, all but two were puppies. Despite this only six of them (five puppies and one adult) were adopted locally. All the other dogs, despite being well behaved, young, cute and cuddly, had to be transported to another state to await adoption at one of our (no-kill) rescue partner shelters.
LESSON TO BE LEARNED: THERE IS NO MARKET HERE FOR DOGS, NOT EVEN PUPPIES! PLEASE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO STOP BREEDING THEIR DOGS!
